What a follower list actually tells you
Recent follows show what a profile is interested in. Recent followers show the opposite direction: who has started paying attention to it. That makes the follower list useful for a different set of questions — whether an account is growing, whether a post or a mention brought a wave of new people in, and whether the audience arriving now looks like the audience that was already there.
How a new follower is identified
By comparison, not by reading a position in a list. LastFollow’s servers take a full copy of the follower list at your chosen hour and set it against the copy from the check before; a handle present today and absent yesterday is a new follower, and one that has disappeared is a departure. Each of those names is then confirmed with a separate lookup, because Instagram sometimes returns a long list with gaps in it, and an unconfirmed name is dropped rather than reported.
Counts tell you the shape, names tell you the story
A follower count on its own says nothing about movement: two accounts can both sit at 1,200 followers while one gained forty and lost forty in a week and the other did nothing at all. Up to a thousand followers LastFollow tracks the individual names. Above that it switches to counts only — no names collected — and plots the daily rise and fall over as much as ninety days, which is the honest way to read a large account.
How this relates to unfollowers
Instagram sends no notification when someone unfollows and keeps no record you can look back on. The only way anyone identifies an unfollower is by comparing a follower list against an earlier copy of the same list and seeing who is missing — which is precisely what the daily check does. That also sets the boundary: unfollower tracking can only ever cover the period since the checks began, and it starts producing answers from the second check onwards.
Where the limits are
A private account’s follower list is visible only to accounts it has approved, and no tool changes that. LastFollow can read one only from your own iPhone, with your own Instagram session, when you open the app and already follow that account — which means no automatic check and no automatic notification for private profiles, and a ceiling of five hundred people. History cannot be backfilled: the record starts at the first check. And no app can show who viewed a profile; Instagram does not expose that data at all.
