Last follows and recent follows on Instagram, explained
“Last followed” and “recent follows” get used for two opposite things on Instagram: the accounts a profile started following, and the people who started following that profile. This page sorts out which list a phrase points to, and how a new follow in either direction is established from two dated checks rather than from where a name sits in a list.
Short answer: A recent follow on Instagram is proven by comparison, not read from a list. Instagram attaches no date to entries on another profile’s Followers or Following list, so the only way to say an account followed recently is to record the list at one time, record it again later and look at what is new. LastFollow does this for a public account once a day for both lists, confirms each change with a separate lookup, and reports new follows and new followers dated to the day they appeared.
- First check: both lists are recorded. When you start tracking a public account, its Followers and Following lists are stored as they are. This is the baseline, so no changes are reported yet.
- Next day: the lists are read again. At the hour you chose, the same two lists are read and compared with the stored copies.
- Each difference is confirmed. Every added or missing name is checked again with a separate lookup, and only names that pass reach the report.
- The report names follows in both directions. You see which accounts the profile started or stopped following, and who started or stopped following it, dated to that day.
Which list does each phrase mean?
Most confusion comes from the direction. “Who did they last follow” and “recent follows” usually mean the Following list: accounts the profile chose to follow, which reflect its own new interests and contacts. “Last follower” and “who recently followed them” mean the Followers list: people who chose to follow the profile, which says more about attention paid to it than about its own activity. “Last followed” can go either way, depending on whether the profile is the one following or the one being followed. Why no list shows the last follow directly
Instagram keeps the date of each follow to itself when you look at someone else’s profile. Their lists show accounts without timestamps, and where a name sits is not a record of when it arrived. A list presented as “in order” after a single look therefore has no follow date behind its sorting. A follow can only be called recent when there is an earlier record of the same list that did not contain it. That is why every honest answer to the last follow question needs time: two readings, some hours or a day apart. It also means the answer can never reach further back than the first reading.
What “recent” means in a LastFollow report
In a report, recent means “between the previous daily check and this one”. A new follow is dated to that day, not to an hour or a minute. A follow that was made and removed again between two checks leaves no trace, because neither reading contains it. Both lists are compared at the same check, so a single day’s report can contain accounts the profile started following and people who started following it, and the direction of each change is what separates them. If a list grows past 1,000 people, names are no longer collected for it and the report shows the daily count instead, charted over up to 90 days.
Last Follow and Recent Follow as names
Some of these phrases are also product names, which adds a second layer of confusion. As an iPhone app, LastFollow (also written Last Follow) is LastFollow: Profile Tracker, published by Mert Sen FINDICAK, and its official website is lastfollow.app. Apps and websites called Recent Follow, and the website at lastfollow.com, are separate services with no connection to it, and this page makes no claims about what they do. The domain lastfollow.app together with App Store ID 6746115791 is how to tell the official app apart from a similarly named result. LastFollow is free to download, tracking needs a paid subscription, and it is not affiliated with Instagram or Meta.
Public, private and your own account
Everything above applies to public accounts, which are checked on LastFollow’s servers with no Instagram login. A private account is different by design: its lists open only to accounts it has accepted, so LastFollow reads one only on your iPhone, with your own Instagram session and only if you already follow it, when you open the app, up to 500 people and with no automatic notification. Your own follower and following lists are also read on the phone and are not sent to LastFollow’s servers. In none of these cases does the app post, follow or like anything, and the account being checked is not notified.

Recent followers are accounts that started following a profile; recent follows are accounts that profile started following. The daily check reports both as a difference against the previous check.
