Why Instagram does not show recent followers in order
Short answer: Instagram does not sort follower or following lists by the date a follow happened, with one exception: your own Following list has a sort control that includes Date followed. Your own Followers list, and both lists on every other profile, have no date sort, so an account near the top did not necessarily follow recently. To see recent followers or recent follows reliably, keep a copy of the list, read it again later and compare which names were added and which are gone.
The one list you can sort by date: your own Following
Open your own profile, tap Following, and use the sort control at the top of the list. At the time of writing it offers Default, plus Date followed with Latest and Earliest. Latest puts the accounts you followed most recently first. That is Instagram's own, reliable answer to “who did I follow last?”.
The control applies to your own following list only. It says nothing about who follows you, and it does not appear when you open someone else's profile. Instagram changes these screens without notice, so check the labels in your current app version rather than relying on a screenshot from someone else.
The same screen also groups your following into categories such as “Least interacted with” and “Most shown in feed”. Those are based on interaction, not on dates, and neither tells you when a follow began.
Where there is no date sort
Your own Followers list has no Date followed option. New followers do reach you as activity notifications, but the list itself is not a timeline, and Instagram sends nothing when someone stops following you.
On any other profile, neither the Followers nor the Following list can be sorted. The order you see is set by Instagram, not by follow date: two people opening the same profile may see different arrangements, and the arrangement can change between visits. We have no verified specification of how that order is calculated, and this guide does not claim ranking factors or a follower-count threshold that switches lists to A-to-Z.
What list position cannot tell you
- That an account near the top followed recently. Position is not a date.
- That an alphabetical-looking list is a timeline. If you see A-to-Z, that is an arrangement of names; do not read A-to-Z order as a newest-first timeline.
- How often two accounts interact, who messages whom, or how close two people are. A screenshot records which rows were visible at that moment and nothing more.
If two people see different arrangements of the same list, the difference alone does not show that a follow happened between their visits. What can be compared is which account names are present, when each list was read, and whether each list loaded fully.
Followers and followings are separate questions
A profile's following list contains accounts that the profile follows. Its follower list contains accounts that follow it. Choose the list that answers your question before comparing two checks.
To look for newly followed accounts, compare the following list. To look for new or missing followers, compare the follower list. A change in either list does not establish the person's motive or relationship with another account.
What these checks cannot establish
LastFollow does not provide a list of profile visitors or identify who viewed an ordinary post. A follower list, like count or view count should not be presented as a substitute for those identities.
A current list alone is not a complete follow history. Comparing it with an earlier saved list can show which accounts became visible or disappeared between the two checks, but does not establish an exact follow or unfollow time. Missing accounts can also reflect availability, access or username changes.
Evaluate a tool by the data it explains and the access it requires. LastFollow cannot bypass a private profile's permissions or recover activity it has not been able to observe.
The method that does show recent followers and follows
Record the usernames you can access and the time of the check. Repeat the check later and compare membership rather than row position: who is present now who was not before, and who has gone. Make sure each list loaded completely first — a partly loaded list is the main way a manual comparison produces a change that never happened.
That is the whole method, and it is what LastFollow automates on iPhone for a public account. It reads the chosen list once a day at an hour you pick, compares it against the previous day's reading, and confirms every name with a second, separate lookup before showing it; a name it cannot confirm is not shown at all. Because a comparison needs two readings, the first check is a baseline and the first report arrives after the next day's check. It is one check a day, not a live feed.
Access stays bounded by what Instagram makes visible. A public profile is read on LastFollow's servers, which is what allows the daily check to run without you. A private profile is readable only from your own phone, with your own Instagram session, and only when you already follow that account.
